WhatsApp Shuts Down Support for Older Devices

WhatsApp, owned by Meta, has announced that it will stop supporting a number of older smartphones starting May 5, 2025, as part of a tech strategy aimed at enhancing security and improving the app’s overall performance.

This decision comes as part of a series of updates WhatsApp is implementing to keep up with the rapid evolution of operating systems. As the deadline approaches, the app’s management has urged users to check their device operating system versions to avoid any unexpected service interruptions.

According to official information, WhatsApp will no longer be compatible with devices running Android versions older than Android 5.0 or iOS versions older than iOS 12. This means that devices such as the iPhone 6 and earlier, some Samsung Galaxy S models, as well as several Huawei, HTC, and Sony phones, will no longer be able to run the app—unless the system can be updated or the phone is replaced with a newer model.

WhatsApp explained that the decision is based on clear technical reasons, including the lack of security updates for old devices, which makes them vulnerable to hacking, as well as their inability to support new features being gradually introduced to the app. A more modern operating environment is necessary to ensure efficient performance.
