A Review of the MINURSO Mission Extension and Strengthening Stability in the Moroccan Sahara

Alalam24, The MINURSO mission has been extended for one year, and this decision is based on enduring principles and foundations that reflect the United Nations’ commitment to resolving the conflict in the Moroccan Sahara. The following analytical observations can be made about this decision

. MINURSO aligns with Morocco’s stance on conflict resolution, seeking stability through a political solution that is fair to all parties. Morocco emphasizes the need for a permanent and mutually agreed-upon solution rather than a referendum

The decision highlights the roles of other parties, such as Algeria and Mauritania, urging them to actively participate in conflict resolution and contribute to addressing it by cooperating with the United Nations and engaging in negotiations

The decision reaffirms Morocco’s role in human rights, emphasizing the pivotal role of the National Council for Human Rights and its regional committees in Laayoune. It also notes Morocco’s positive interaction with UN human rights mechanisms

The Security Council calls for the establishme of international mechanisms for monitoring human rights, not only in the southern regions of the Kingdom of Morocco but also in the camps where Sahrawis are subjected to violations. The involved parties must cooperate with UN bodies and engage in negotiations rather than resorting to a policy of intransigence

On the other hand, the Security Council has urged Algeria to swiftly and positively engage with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to enable the registration and census of Sahrawis held in the Tindouf camps. This is a step that the Polisario Front has consistently resisted in an attempt to exploit the suffering of these refugees and divert international aid for the benefit of its leadership

In general, it appears that the Kingdom of Morocco is committed to safeguarding and promoting human rights in accordance with its international obligations. This decision reflects Morocco’s peaceful and political approach to resolving the conflict and underscores the failure of attempts by the Polisario and Algeria to exert pressure on the Security Council, which has affirmed its commitment to the ceasefire
