Japanese Study: One Cup of Green Tea a Day May Protect Against a Serious Disease

A new scientific study conducted by researchers at Kagoshima University in Japan has revealed that regular consumption of green tea may be an effective way to prevent fatty liver disease, one of the most common liver conditions worldwide.

According to the findings published in the scientific journal Food & Function, drinking green tea daily helps reduce fat accumulation in the liver, improves lipid metabolism, and restores the balance of beneficial gut bacteria. These combined effects have a positive impact on both digestive and liver health.

The researchers explained that this protective effect is due to “(−)-Epigallocatechin-3-gallate” (EGCG), a powerful antioxidant found in high concentrations in green tea leaves. EGCG helps stimulate enzymes that break down fats, prevents their buildup in liver cells, and lowers levels of enzymes and triglycerides associated with liver damage.

The study’s authors emphasized that simply drinking one cup of traditionally brewed green tea a day could be an easy and effective step to help prevent nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and related metabolic disorders, without the need for complex medical treatments.
