OpenAI has announced the commencement of training a new flagship AI model that will succeed its current foundational model, GPT-4, which powers the popular chatbot ChatGPT.
In a blog post published on Tuesday, May 28th, the company stated that it expects the new model to “offer a higher level of capabilities” in its pursuit of developing artificial general intelligence (AGI), a concept where the model possesses the ability to perform the same tasks as the human brain. The new model will be employed in managing AI products that include chatbots, digital assistants, search engines, and image generation models.
Training AI models can take months or even years. Upon completion of training, companies typically take several more months to test and refine the technology for general use. This means that OpenAI’s upcoming model could be released in about nine months to a year or more.
The company also announced the formation of a new safety and security committee to explore ways to mitigate the risks posed by the new model and future technologies.
OpenAI aims to advance AI technologies at a faster pace than its competitors, while simultaneously addressing concerns from critics who view these technologies as becoming increasingly dangerous. These concerns stem from the potential for these models to contribute to the spread of misinformation and the fear of job displacement.
