Google Surprises Education Sector with New Decision on Artificial Intelligence in Schools

Google has announced a strategic reversal, deciding to disable the automatic activation of its artificial intelligence tools and features for school students. The decision follows a wave of strong criticism from education leaders and lawmakers who raised concerns about the introduction of these technologies into classrooms without prior authorization.

Under the company’s newly announced measures, its Gemini AI model, along with AI-powered features integrated into educational platforms such as NotebookLM and Google Classroom, will be disabled by default for students from kindergarten through 12th grade (K–12).

These services will only be reactivated following an explicit decision by school administrators and educational institutions. Google confirmed that the new controls will be implemented globally, starting in the United States.

Despite this policy reversal regarding educational platforms, Google clarified that schools will not be able to allow students to use its traditional search engine independently of the artificial intelligence features integrated into it.

Chris Phillips, Google’s Vice President for Education, explained that artificial intelligence has become an integral part of the search engine’s infrastructure. Consequently, if a school decides to ban AI entirely, students will also lose access to Google’s search engine.

This connection has sparked widespread criticism. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani accused Google of exploiting its dominant market position to impose artificial intelligence on public schools, emphasizing that no company should dictate how children are educated.

The decision also follows pressure from U.S. Senators Richard Blumenthal and Josh Hawley, who demanded explanations regarding the automatic activation of AI features for more than 150 million students using Google’s educational platforms and Chromebook devices.

While major school districts, including those in Los Angeles and New York, welcomed the new control options, education authorities stressed the importance of establishing clear regulations to protect students’ privacy and ensure that artificial intelligence supports teachers rather than replaces them.

For its part, Google stated in an official announcement that the latest updates provide schools with “greater control and flexibility,” addressing concerns raised by parents and educators about students using AI tools to complete their school assignments with minimal effort or bypass the learning process altogether.
