Moroccan Jewry is a symbol of firm faith, devotion to the Torah and Jewish tradition

The Knesset plenum approved in second and third reading the bill initiated by Shas, to hold a day to commemorate the heritage of Moroccan and North African Jewry

According to the bill, every year on the 23rd of Tevet – the day of the sinking of the ship “Egoz”, – a national day will be marked to commemorate the heritage of Moroccan and North African Jewry, their immigration to the Land of Israel and to commemorate the memory of those who perished along the way. The term “heritage” will include, among other things, the tradition, culture, art, poetry, spiritual assets and the rulings of the sages of these communities. As part of the day, a special session will be held in the Knesset, a dedicated conference will be held and educational activities will be held in the education system.

The law is intended to pass on to future generations the glorious heritage of the Jews of Morocco and North Africa and to perpetuate the memory of those who gave their lives on their way to the Holy Land.”
