New Medical Innovation Diagnoses Brain Tumors in Minutes

German researchers have developed a groundbreaking artificial intelligence system called “Hetairos”, capable of identifying the type of brain tumor with remarkable accuracy in just 12 minutes by analyzing digital microscopic images of tissue samples.

This technology represents a major breakthrough compared to current complex molecular analyses. Although these analyses are considered the gold standard for diagnosis, they require expensive equipment, specialized laboratories, and can take nearly two weeks to deliver results.

The system underwent intensive training using more than 11,000 microscopic images of tumors collected from 9,606 patients across 11 medical centers on four continents, enabling it to accurately distinguish between 102 different molecular patterns of central nervous system tumors.

Field tests showed that the system’s algorithms achieved an accuracy rate of 87% to 88% in cases classified as having “high certainty.” In direct comparisons of tissue analysis, it even outperformed diagnoses made by experienced specialists and senior neurology department heads.

The medical community views this technology as an extremely valuable tool, particularly for hospitals and healthcare centers that lack the infrastructure required for genetic testing and other complex diagnostic procedures.

However, the developers emphasize that Hetairos is not intended to replace existing laboratory diagnostic methods. Instead, it was designed as an instant decision-support tool that provides doctors with rapid and reliable insights, enabling faster treatment decisions and more precise diagnostic pathways that could help save patients’ lives.
