Disney Invests $1 Billion in OpenAI

The American media and entertainment giant Disney has announced a strategic partnership with artificial intelligence company OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, which includes an investment of $1 billion.

Under the agreement, Walt Disney will become the first major content-licensing partner for an AI-powered video generation tool. The three-year deal will allow users to create and share short videos featuring more than 200 iconic characters from the worlds of Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars, as well as classic animated characters such as Mickey Mouse and Cinderella.

Some videos generated using Sora will be made available on the Disney+ streaming platform. In addition, Disney will become a key client of OpenAI, using its technologies to develop new products and services, and will also roll out ChatGPT for its employees.

This partnership comes amid growing concerns over low-quality content, deepfakes, and copyright issues raised by AI video-generation tools. Both companies reaffirmed their commitment to the responsible use of artificial intelligence.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the agreement demonstrates how creative leaders and AI companies can work together responsibly to drive innovation.

Meanwhile, Robert Iger, CEO of Disney, emphasized that the partnership will expand storytelling capabilities through generative AI while respecting and protecting creators and their works.
