Meta expands its tools by acquiring an AI that automatically summarizes meetings

Meta has announced its decision to acquire Limitless, a U.S.-based startup that develops a wearable pendant designed to record conversations and meetings and summarize them using artificial intelligence. The financial details of the acquisition—of a five-year-old company headquartered in Denver—have not yet been disclosed.

A Meta spokesperson told AFP: “We are pleased to welcome Limitless to Meta to help accelerate the development of AI-powered devices.”

Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO, has placed artificial intelligence at the core of the company’s priorities, with a stated goal of reaching “superhuman intelligence.” AI is already being used to improve Meta’s applications, including Facebook and Instagram, as well as to enhance the capabilities of the smart glasses developed in partnership with EssilorLuxottica.

Dan Siroker, Limitless’ cofounder and CEO, said in a video posted on the company’s website that “Meta recently unveiled a new vision to make superhuman AI accessible to everyone.

This vision is partly built on developing wearable, AI-powered devices. We share this vision and will be joining Meta to help bring it to life.”

According to the tech website Engadget, Limitless’ first product was Rewind, a desktop productivity app that records everything a user does on their computer and turns it into a searchable database controlled through a chatbot.

The company later expanded into hardware with Pendant, a Bluetooth clip-on microphone that applies the same concept—despite privacy concerns—to everything a user says or hears throughout the day.

Limitless has raised around $33 million from investors, and its valuation reached approximately $368 million in its most recent funding round, according to market data group PitchBook. “We are no longer working on a wild or strange idea; we are building a future that is inevitably coming,” Siroker said.

Meanwhile, Zuckerberg has spent considerable sums to attract top AI developers from OpenAI, Apple and Google. Meta also invested heavily in Scale AI earlier this year.

The acquisition of Limitless is considered Meta’s first major takeover since completing its purchase of virtual reality company Within Unlimited in 2023, after a court dismissed an attempt to block the deal over competition concerns.
