YouTube, owned by Google, is testing a new feature that allows users to exchange direct messages, share videos, and interact around them within the mobile app.
According to the platform’s support page, YouTube is experimenting with “new ways to share videos,” including enabling users to have direct conversations about the clips they exchange.
A report from 9to5Google states that this move aims to revive the messaging feature that YouTube had previously launched and then discontinued in 2019.
The new feature is currently available only to users aged 18 and over, and within a limited geographical scope that includes Ireland and Poland. It is considered one of the most requested features, as it will allow sharing all types of videos—long-form content, short videos (“Shorts”), and live streams.
To start using messaging, users will need to exchange invitations before initiating a conversation. They can also decline unwanted invites, block other users, and report inappropriate chats.
YouTube confirmed that it will review messages to ensure they comply with the same community guidelines applied to videos and comments on the platform.
The company has not yet announced when the feature will expand to more regions, but it has already begun rolling out to users in Ireland and Poland since Thursday.
