Israeli Knesset Speaker Sends Congratulatory Message to King Mohammed VI Following UN Security Council Resolution on the Moroccan Sahara
The Speaker of the Israeli Knesset, Amir Ohana, has sent a formal letter to King Mohammed VI expressing his warm congratulations to the Monarch, the Royal Family, and the Moroccan people, following the recent United Nations Security Council resolution recognizing Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative for the Sahara as the basis for a lasting political solution. Ohana described the resolution as “a significant milestone that opens a promising path toward sustainable peace and stability in the region.”
In his message, Ohana recalled that his support for Morocco’s territorial integrity is longstanding. He noted that as early as November 2022, during his participation in the MEDays Conference in Tangier—prior to his appointment as Speaker of the Knesset—he publicly stated in media interviews that Israel “should recognize the Moroccan Sahara” and pledged to work towards that objective.
The Israeli official highlighted that his historic visit to the Moroccan Parliament in June 2023, as the first Knesset Speaker ever to be invited to the institution, offered him another opportunity to reiterate this position publicly before Moroccan lawmakers.
Ohana added that upon his return to Jerusalem, he was the first Israeli official to display in his chambers a new map including the Moroccan Sahara within Morocco’s internationally recognized borders—an act he described as a “gesture of friendship and respect for Morocco’s unity and sovereignty.”
He emphasized that, more than two years later, it is encouraging to witness growing international support for Morocco’s legitimate claims, alongside the deepening of cooperation and ties between Morocco and Israel across various sectors.
The Knesset Speaker concluded his message by expressing hope that this latest development will contribute to lasting peace, stability, and prosperity for the Kingdom of Morocco under the leadership of King Mohammed VI.
