Bloomberg.. Elon Musk in Talks to Buy TikTok

Chinese authorities are considering the possibility that Elon Musk may buy TikTok’s U.S. branch if the popular platform is banned in the United States by the end of the week, according to Bloomberg, the economic news agency.

Last year, the United States passed a law requiring the Chinese entertainment giant ByteDance to sell TikTok by January 19, 2025. If the company does not comply, the app will be banned in the country, where it has 170 million users.

The case has reached the U.S. Supreme Court, which heard arguments from both sides last Friday.

Washington claims it wants to avoid risks of espionage and manipulation by Beijing, while the social network and human rights groups accuse the law of suppressing free speech.

The majority of judges seem to lean toward allowing a TikTok ban.

The Chinese government and ByteDance have always opposed the sale of TikTok’s U.S. branch.

However, confidential sources told Bloomberg that “senior Chinese officials have begun discussing emergency plans for TikTok as part of broader negotiations with the Trump administration, one of which includes Musk.”

Elon Musk, founder of Tesla and SpaceX, shocked everyone by announcing his intention to buy Twitter in early 2022. After twists and turns and a campaign via the platform, he eventually purchased it for $44 billion.
