Tokyo’s famous fish market saw the sale of a giant bluefin tuna weighing 276 kilograms for about 1.3 million dollars during the first auction of the season.
This transaction represents the second-highest amount ever reached in auction history, underscoring the economic and cultural significance of tuna fishing in Japan.
The fish was caught off the coast of Oma, known for the exceptional quality of its fish. Fisherman Masahiro Takiyuchi described the tuna as “as fat as a cow,” highlighting its high quality, which raised its value at auction.
This record sale is expected to fuel optimism for an economic recovery in Japan after years of crisis.
