Morocco Leads Two Meetings with the European Union on Counterterrorism
Alalam24 , Morocco, as the co-president of the Global Forum on Terrorism, jointly chaired with the European Union, the fifth dialogue session between the forum and its specialized institutions, as well as the ninth consultative meeting on partnership with the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Coordination Compact held on March 20th and 21st.
The two remote meetings were distinguished by the significant participation of officials and representatives of working groups and initiatives launched by the Global Forum on Terrorism, as well as the specialized institutions affiliated with the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Coordination Compact, especially the “Hedayah” Center of Excellence, the Global Fund for Community Engagement and Resilience, and the International Institute for Justice and the Rule of Law, in addition to the member states of the forum.
During these meetings, the Director of Comprehensive Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Abroad, Ismail El Shagouri, highlighted Morocco’s continued commitment to regional and global stability and security during his third term as co-president of the Global Forum on Terrorism. He emphasized the integrated and cooperative approach adopted by the Kingdom to enhance multi-party cooperation in confronting the terrorist threat.
After underscoring the importance of maintaining the momentum characterizing the cooperation relationships between the Global Forum on Terrorism on the one hand, and the specialized institutions and the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Coordination Compact on the other hand, Mr. El Shagouri renewed the necessity to explore more patterns to ensure the application of best practices related to countering terrorism and violent extremism, some of which have already been adopted by the UN Security Council and General Assembly.
He indicated that the implementation process should be carried out through an approach that takes into account the national priorities and needs of countries facing the terrorist threat, especially on the African continent.
These consultations provided participants with the opportunity to highlight Morocco’s strong commitment and continuous efforts as co-president with the Netherlands and Canada, and currently with the European Union, as well as all partners cooperating with the Global Forum on Terrorism, to enhance coordination and partnerships in the prevention and combating of terrorism and violent extremism.
The participants praised the role of Morocco and its essential contribution to maintaining the distinguished partnership launched under its co-presidency between the Global Forum on Terrorism, specialized institutions, and the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Coordination Compact.
The participants concluded by identifying the priorities for future work, especially regarding new and emerging technologies in countering terrorism and violent extremism in Africa.
